Mobian Mayhem Character Rankings
Kit-by-kit notes for Rework Countdown lobbies. Pair this with the tier list hub and the Sonic / Shadow pages.
Only two kits are complete in the public playtest, so this ranking page is a matchup document more than a twenty-row table. Use it with the tier list hub, then jump to Sonic or Shadow for move names.
Ranked kits
S — Sonic (Speed Perfected)
Sonic is the default recommendation for anyone who just left getting started. The M1 string into down slam into Sonic Flare is a real confirm, not a lab-only route. Freestyle Flurry and Sonic Flare both carry finishers, Blue Blur extends, and Light Speed Barrage has a hold-space variant that catches people who only learned the tap version from a nine-second clip.
Movement is the silent rank boost. Holding run for about five seconds enables boost clash if you meet another booster head-on. Rails exist on the current map; jumping onto them is free distance Sonic converts better than Shadow. Spin ball (R) is a Sonic-only mobility button that still looks like the console games, which matters when you need to re-enter after a missed Grand Slam.
Weakness: you can be predictable. If every stock starts with the same four M1s into Flare, a patient Shadow who saves block (F) will eat the string and dump time stop on you. Learn the Sonic combo page so you have a side-dash follow-up after Flare’s right-side shove.
A — Shadow (Ultimate Being)
Shadow is the kit you pick when the lobby is already messy. His first tool can finisher, then convert into a time stop that community testing puts at up to five players. That single interaction is why he is not B. Spear Combo is timed; mashers think the move is broken when they are just early. Chaotic Burst wants a hold, not a tap. Ultimate Being awakening is a cutscene monster if you are already in range.
Anti-team is the other reason he sits in A instead of “cool but worse Sonic.” The playtest added a dedicated anti-team cinematic for Shadow (and later a Sonic version). In a 16-player server that is not flavor text. If two people sandwich you, the designed answer is this kit, not a script.
Weakness: execution and range. If you cannot land the opener, you do not get time stop. If you awaken from downtown, Grand Slam equivalents on Sonic still outpace you. Practice on the Shadow guide until Spear Combo’s timed window is muscle memory.
Unranked / upcoming
Knuckles is the next named kit: free Sonic and Shadow on the full drop, Knuckles as early-access. Not ranked. Metal Sonic is confirmed as a future character with the variant (Neo / Mecha / classic) still open. Tails, Silver, and non-canon Archie designs are requests, not ranks. Details on upcoming characters.
Sonic vs Shadow in practice
| Situation | Favored kit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral 1v1, similar ping | Sonic | Easier confirms |
| You are being doubled | Shadow | Anti-team + time stop |
| Rail / boost map control | Sonic | Run cycle and spin ball |
| You already won a finisher | Shadow | Time stop snowballs the stock |
| You mash buttons | Sonic | Fewer timed holds |
| You like command grabs | Either | Both kits still play like battlegrounds grabs |
Wall combos are kit-agnostic: four M1s plus a front dash near a wall. Whoever learns that first climbs a full rank in public servers. Read wall combos even if you only care about this table.
How patches moved the needle
Spring 2026 playtest updates added Sonic Flare’s finisher, a jump-awakening variant with a rare voice line, Super Cyclone-style awakening follow-ups, boost clash, and rails. Shadow’s time-control rework and anti-team tool arrived in the same window. That is why older “Shadow is unfinished” takes from pre-March showcases are stale. Cross-check playtest history and the rework page before you quote a February clip.
Using ranks without becoming a snob
Pick Sonic to learn the engine. Pick Shadow when you are tired of 3v1s. Alternate in ranked-mindset sessions so you understand both sides of a clash. The controls page is the same for both kits; your rank difference is almost entirely specials and awakening, not the M1 chain.
When a third kit ships, this page gets a new heading and the tier list hub gets a new letter. Until the countdown hits zero, S and A are the whole argument.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I main Shadow to climb?
Only if you can hit timed tools. Otherwise Sonic’s confirms will climb faster in public servers.
Does anti-team make Shadow S?
It makes him mandatory in sweaty group lobbies, but Sonic still wins the solo-queue consistency argument.
Are skins ranked?
No. Cosmetic ties and palettes do not change frame data.
Where do I learn the actual routes?
Sonic combos and the Shadow guide. This page is the ranking, not the lab.
