Tips and Tricks for Mobian Mayhem
The fifty things that separate a public-server regular from the person who actually wins three stocks before dying.
This page is the collection of things that are not on the official control card and do not live on a dedicated guide page. Fifty tips, no particular order, written for players who already know getting started but want to stop making the same mistakes the lobby notices.
Core habits
-
Four M1s, not five. The chain is four hits. After the fourth you are in recovery or you spend a dash. Finishing a fifth hit if the game allows it usually means you knocked them too far for your special.
-
Front dash for wall combos. Side dash is for chasing Sonic Flare’s right-side shove. Front dash is the wall combo input. They are not the same button with different directions — they are different decisions.
-
Do not mash dash on wakeup. Dash on wakeup is how you eat a Spear Combo or a Chaos Control. Block first, then decide.
-
Do not open the emote wheel mid-stock. B / D-pad Right is the emote wheel. Opening it during a string is how you die looking at a menu.
-
Enable shift lock and leave it on. First-person finishers and Chaos Control already steal the camera. Shift lock keeps your directional awareness.
Sonic-specific tips
-
Sonic Flare shoves right. If you do not side-dash right after Flare, you drop the confirm. The opponent is literally pushed to your right.
-
Light Speed Barrage has a hold variant. Tap and hold are different moves. If you only learned from a short clip that showed the tap version, you are missing half the move.
-
Jump + awakening is a different presentation. Faster, and rolls a rare voice line. It is a mix-up, not extra damage.
-
Super Cyclone follow-up. A later patch added a radius cyclone tool you can press twice for a faster second grab. Use it in a pack, not from full screen.
-
Do not start wall combos with Blue Blur. It launches them into open space. Save Blur for after the wall confirm, not before.
-
Spin ball (R) is not the wall-combo dash. You can jump-R into a slam, but the wall combo requires a front dash after the M1 chain.
-
Anti-team exists on Sonic too. Added in later playtest patches so stacks are not only Shadow’s problem. It is a “two people are on me” button, not a combo starter.
Shadow-specific tips
-
Chaotic Burst wants a hold. Tap is a miss. This is the most common Shadow mistake — playing Sonic muscle memory and whiffing because you tapped instead of held.
-
Spear Combo is timed. There is a window, not a frame-one press. Console players keep asking which button; the answer is the hold / timed press equivalent of space / jump.
-
First tool finisher converts into time stop. The tool is not just a poke — if it finisher, you can convert into a multi-target time stop (community testing: up to five).
-
Anti-team is not awakening. Use it when doubled, then dash. Do not Ultimate Being during the cinematic.
-
Do not Ultimate Being from full screen. Grand Slam needs chest range. If you Super from downtown you will watch a cutscene of yourself missing.
-
Time stop is not a full-server freeze. You earn it off a finisher conversion. It is not a button you press from spawn.
Movement tips
-
Boost is hold run, about five seconds. Not a cooldown button. Walking, blocking, or tapping dash resets the build-up.
-
Boost clash needs head-on collision. Side clips do nothing fancy. Chasing someone from behind is just a faster run.
-
Jump onto rails. Walking beside the rail does nothing. This is why comment sections filled with “I cannot grind.”
-
Do not treat rails as wall combo surfaces. Rails are for grinding. Walls are for four M1s plus a front dash.
-
High ground near walls is the best position. Being above an opponent gives you a down-slam approach they have to respect.
-
Cornered opponents have fewer escape options. Herd people toward walls before you start the M1 chain.
-
Open plazas attract third parties. Sixteen-player servers see everything. Fight near geometry, not in the middle of the map.
Awakening tips
-
Fill the meter by landing hits. M1s count. Confirms count. Whiffed Light Speed Barrage from a rail does not.
-
Grounded vs jump awakening are different. Jump is faster with a rare voice line. Both do not need to be hunted — the line is a bonus, not the goal.
-
Do not Super as a panic button. If you lose neutral, take the stock and keep the meter lesson. Panic Supers lose more stocks than they win.
-
Do not awaken during a time stop freeze. Wasted awakening is a donation. Only Super if you are already in range.
-
Holding awakening changes how opponents play. If you are ahead in stocks, sometimes the threat of the cutscene is more valuable than the damage.
Anti-team and group fight tips
-
Fight near walls, not in open plazas. Walls limit approach angles and make anti-team more effective.
-
Keep one opponent between you and the nearest threat. If two people are on you, one of them is always exposed.
-
Do not emote mid-stock. See tip four. This page is not joking.
-
If two players are colliding in boost, take the side angle. You cannot boost-clash alone, but you can grab the loser of the clash.
-
Long combos attract third parties. Sometimes take the safe confirm and reset to neutral instead of going for a risky ender that donates your highlight to a Sonic waiting behind you.
-
Anti-team cinematics also like walls. If two people pin you, use the designed tool instead of insisting on a textbook wall combo.
Common mistakes to stop making
-
Stopping M1s after three hits. You want four for a wall combo, three for a down-slam confirm. Three is not automatically better than four.
-
Dashing into a wall you thought was a combo surface. Thin railings and crates do not count. Big building faces and fat pillars do.
-
Boosting on spawn into a wall combo. You donated a stock. Boost is a resource, not a panic.
-
Using awakening at 10% against a Sonic who still has Flurry. You will die in a cutscene you started.
-
Running circles hoping the boost animation will invent a second player. See boost clash requirements.
-
Buying a panic gamepass during countdown. Early-access talk around Knuckles is for the full drop, not a panic buy during rework.
-
Running a script to “fix” the game. Scripts do not unlock Knuckles, do not give infinite time stop, and are not worth the ban.
-
Quoting a February clip as gospel. Pre-March showcases showed unfinished Shadow and no V0.5 movement layer.
-
Believing “final update” thumbnails. Creator Thursday “final updates” were playtest patches, not 1.0.
Little-known mechanics
-
Spear Combo has a variant. Console players keep asking which button it is; the answer is the hold / timed press equivalent.
-
Spin ball (R) can be jump-R. Like the platformers. Use it to re-enter after a missed Grand Slam.
-
Super Cyclone can be pressed twice. A later patch added a faster radius grab follow-up.
-
Jump awakening rolls a rare voice line. Talked about as a one-in-a-hundred roll. Hunt it for a clip, not for damage.
-
The emote wheel closes your combat brain. Opening it mid-string is not a skill move. Leave it closed until the stock is over.
After the fifty tips
Read the controls, wall combo, and one kit lab (Sonic combos or Shadow guide) to make these tips make sense in your hands. Fifty tips do not replace muscle memory — they just tell you what to build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why do I keep eating Spear Combo?
You are probably dashing on wakeup. Block first, then decide.
How do I actually use Light Speed Barrage?
Hold space (or the jump equivalent) while pressing the skill. The tap version is different from the hold version.
Why does my wall combo never trigger?
You might be side-dashing, using a thin railing instead of a real wall, or dashing after recovery started.
Is anti-team worth using in 1v1?
No. It is a group fight tool. In 1v1 the cinematic wastes time you could spend confirming.
